Why do fintech companies use Vilnius desktops?
Many fintech firms hold licences from the Bank of Lithuania and need their operations, compliance and support staff to work within a controlled, EU-based environment. A Vilnius desktop provides a Lithuanian IP for accessing regulators, banking partners and internal systems, while data remains in a GDPR-compliant setting. Staff can work remotely from anywhere without storing sensitive information on personal devices. Firms should still follow their own compliance frameworks, but a local desktop makes those frameworks easier to implement and demonstrate.
Can I use Smart-ID and Lithuanian e-services?
Smart-ID and mobile e-signature authenticate through your phone, so they work normally when you log in to Lithuanian banks, Sodra or the State Tax Inspectorate from your Vilnius desktop. The desktop provides a consistent Lithuanian IP and a secure environment for downloading and submitting documents. This is especially useful for Lithuanians living abroad who need to handle tax declarations or social insurance matters. Smart-ID stays on your phone; the desktop just provides the familiar Lithuanian connection. The annual income declaration in spring is the most common reason Lithuanians abroad log in.
How does the IPv6 option work?
Each Vilnius desktop includes a Lithuanian IPv4 address. If you need IPv6, for example to reach IPv6-only services or to test applications, it can be enabled for $10 per month. Contact our team, and we will configure IPv6 on your desktop and provide the address details. Most users only need IPv4, but the option is available for technical teams and developers preparing for modern networks. The add-on can be cancelled at any time without affecting your IPv4 address.
Is the platform GDPR-compliant?
The Vilnius platform operates in a GDPR-compliant environment within the EU, which is important for fintech firms and businesses handling personal data of EU residents. As the desktop administrator, you are responsible for how you process and secure data, including access controls and retention policies. Our staff do not open your files without an explicit request. Documentation about the environment can be provided on request for your compliance files. The Lithuanian State Data Protection Inspectorate supervises these rules locally.
Which size suits a compliance officer?
A compliance officer working with transaction monitoring tools, browsers, Office and document management typically needs the four- or six-core size with 8 to 10 GB of memory. If you run heavy analytics or several monitoring dashboards simultaneously, the eight- or ten-core sizes provide more headroom. Teams sharing a desktop should choose a Windows Server edition and a larger size with appropriate Remote Desktop licensing. AML screening tools with large watchlists benefit from the extra memory. Upgrading later is painless.
Can I type Lithuanian characters on the desktop?
Yes. Add Lithuanian in Windows language settings and the standard keyboard layout gives you ą, č, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū and ž on familiar keys, with a shortcut to switch back to English. You can also change the full interface language for colleagues who prefer Lithuanian menus. This is important when preparing documents for Sodra, VMI or Lithuanian clients, where correct spelling of names and addresses matters. Lithuanian emigrants using English keyboards abroad simply select the Lithuanian layout inside the session, and the characters appear correctly regardless of what is printed on their own keys.
How quickly is a Vilnius desktop deployed?
Deployment is automatic and normally finishes within minutes of payment. You receive the Lithuanian IP, Administrator username and a temporary password by email, and can connect immediately with the Remote Desktop app. Fintech teams onboarding several compliance or support staff often ask us to prepare a batch of identical desktops in advance, which we are happy to do. After the first login, change the password, enable multi-factor authentication if your policies require it, and install your monitoring, CRM and office tools. If you plan to use IPv6, mention it in the same message so it can be enabled from the start.
Is Vilnius a good base for all three Baltic states?
For most purposes, yes. Latency from Vilnius to Riga and Tallinn is low, so staff in all three capitals enjoy responsive sessions, and many regional companies centralise their Baltic back office in Lithuania because of its large talent pool and fintech ecosystem. A Lithuanian IP is naturally local for Lithuanian services; Latvian and Estonian banks and portals will see a foreign but nearby EU address. If you need a Latvian address specifically, our Riga desktop complements a Vilnius one, and companies operating across the Baltics sometimes run one desktop in each country for local banking.
